Sacrificial Gear Design

This gear is designed to act as a sacrificial component within the kickstart mechanism. If the kickstart system is subjected to excessive force or a severe shock load, the gear is intended to fail before more expensive internal gearbox components are damaged.

Replacing the shear gear is normally straightforward and considerably less costly than repairing damaged gearbox parts.

Damage to this gear is usually preventable. The most common causes are:

• Poor kickstart technique
• Attempting to start the engine without first bringing it to top dead centre (TDC)
• Forcing or stamping on the kickstart lever
• Repeated kickback caused by an incorrectly set up or untuned carburettor
• Continuing to use the kickstart when it is not engaging correctly

Correct Kickstart Use

To reduce the risk of damage:

• Slowly bring the engine up to compression and locate top dead centre (TDC) before kicking
• Use one controlled, full kick through the lever
• Do not stamp on, repeatedly strike or force the kickstart lever
• Do not continue using the kickstart if it slips, jams or fails to engage correctly
• Ensure the carburettor is correctly set up and tuned to prevent poor starting and kickback

The cause of the original failure should be identified and corrected before fitting a replacement gear. Otherwise, the new gear may also become damaged.
